Epoxy Grout vs Cement Grout – What’s Best for Your Tiles?

If you’ve been looking at new tiles, you’ve probably heard the term epoxy grout thrown around. Most people don’t know the difference between epoxy and traditional cement grout, but it can make a big difference to the look, strength, and lifespan of your tiled areas.

As a local tiler in Warrington, Cheshire, with over 20 years in the trade, I’ve used both hundreds of times — so here’s the honest breakdown.

Durability & Strength

Epoxy grout is made from resin and hardener, which means once it’s cured, it becomes extremely strong and fully waterproof. It doesn’t crack or crumble like cement grout can over time.

Cement grout, on the other hand, is more porous and can wear down or stain, especially in areas that get regular use.

Winner: Epoxy grout by a mile for strength and longevity.

Water Resistance

Because epoxy grout doesn’t absorb water, it provides excellent protection against moisture. It keeps out mould and mildew, and you don’t need to seal it afterwards.

Cement grout absorbs moisture unless it’s sealed properly — and even then, that seal can wear away over time.

Winner: Epoxy grout again — it’s fully waterproof.

Appearance & Maintenance

Epoxy grout keeps its colour much better than cement grout. It won’t stain or fade, and it’s easy to clean — a simple wipe down does the job.

Cement grout can discolour with age, especially lighter colours, and often needs resealing to keep it looking fresh.

Winner: Epoxy grout for a long-lasting, clean look.

Installation & Cost

Here’s where cement grout wins a few points. It’s cheaper and easier to work with. Epoxy grout sets fast, so it needs an experienced tiler who knows how to handle it before it hardens.

It takes more skill (and time) to apply epoxy grout properly, which is why it’s usually more expensive — but you’re paying for durability that can last decades.

Winner: Cement grout for budget jobs, epoxy grout for premium quality.

Final Thoughts

If you’re after a quick, low-cost fix, cement grout will do the job.

But if you want a finish that lasts, stays clean, and won’t let water or mould ruin your tiles, epoxy grout is absolutely worth it.

At Paul the Tiler, we have the option to use premium epoxy grouts where it suits the job. It’s tougher, cleaner, and longer-lasting — ideal for anyone who wants a professional finish that stands the test of time.
